What happens during a program?

Esperanza y Vida© offers more than just hope and life.  It also teaches women and their husbands/partners some simple things they can do in their own lives for their health well-being.

During the breast and cervical program, trained lay health advisors teach participants about monthly breast self examination. In addition, the instructors answer questions regarding Pap tests (a test for finding cervical cancer) and mammograms (a special kind of X-ray that helps look for breast cancer).

During the diabetes program, the instructors allow the participants to have the chance to learn about the risk factors associated with diabetes and how to prevent the disease before it occurs, by encouraging participants to get blood glucose testing (a test that shows if you are at risk for or if you have diabetes).

Additionally, all participants will be informed of sites in their communities which offer the screening tests at low or, in some cases, no cost.
